COP Troika must lead the way in 1.5°C climate action plans

New York, United States – The Troika of COP Presidencies, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan and Brazil have held another “high-level” political meeting in New York at the UN General Assembly as part of their Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C ahead of COP29.

In response, Tracy Carty, Climate Politics Expert, Greenpeace International said: “We’ve heard a lot of talk from the Troika about their roadmap and their promise to submit 1.5°C-aligned NDCs. But where is the detail? They’ve talked about a ‘transformational’ year, but the world needs less talk and more leadership and it’s time to put policy into action.”

“COP hosts have a responsibility to deliver progress and the answer is not found at the bottom of an oil well or a gas pipeline. What’s needed is a commitment to embed in the new 2035 NDCs the COP28 decision to transition away from fossil fuels. Nothing short of that will suffice.”

“The Troika have been hosting meetings to stimulate ambition, enhance action and implementation, but the surest and fastest way to deliver change is to lead the way. Rather than fuel more climate destruction, we need to stop producing  and the next generation of Nationally Determined Contributions must include economy-wide plans to phase out coal, oil and gas use. We call on the Troika to set the standard and chart a real path towards 1.5°C.”
