New York Climate Week Webinar: Vietnam’s Unjust Energy Transition

We have great news! Climate defender Hoang Thi Minh Hong was freed in Vietnam on Saturday, September 21, 2024, a year after being sentenced in Ho Chi Minh City. Her release came after thousands of people from 55 countries signed petitions and pressured officials.

But Hong’s case isn’t an isolated one. It’s part of a broader pattern of repression against climate defenders. Many, like Dang Dinh Bach, are still in prison. This is why we must stay united and fight for those still behind bars.

As we enter New York Climate Week, we call on political leaders to prioritize the safety of climate defenders worldwide. Hong’s story is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of those protecting our planet from fossil fuel corporations, who are willing to put profit over our future. Their fight is our fight.

We welcome everyone to join our webinar to discuss Vietnam’s US$15.5 billion Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the G7. This plan was meant to help Vietnam move to clean energy, but instead, it has excluded civil society, and the targeting of climate defenders has continued. We’ll explore this issue and the broader challenges of creating a fair energy transition.

Date: September 26, 2024 | 1 PM EDT
