Matarbari: Dirty Development
Here’s a film that will open your eyes and strengthen your resolve to fight for human rights.
What better way to commemorate Human Rights Day than watching a film that lifts people’s voices!
December 10 marks the 75th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights, so I’m taking this opportunity to share the first-ever release of our film, “Dirty Development”.
This 20-minute film highlights the struggles of the affected people who lost their lands and livelihoods because of the Japan-funded coal plant project in Matarbari, Bangladesh. It doesn’t only paint a grim picture, don’t worry – it also shows how Japan can do better and put people’s well-being before profit.
Films that highlight human rights and justice can convey stories in a way that words alone cannot, and open our eyes to human rights violations and spark debate and dialogue.
Our story in Matarbari does not always have the same spotlight as other stories around the world, but I firmly believe that we can open hearts and minds one view at a time.
This year’s Human Rights Day theme reiterates dignity, freedom, and justice for all, calling for everyone to #StandUp4HumanRights.
Communities in Matarbari have been suffering from the ill effects of disastrous fossil fuel projects for many years and are fighting to be heard. Learning about their story and sharing it with your friends and family would mean so much – we are counting on everyone to spread the word and take action.
I hope that many will find this film insightful and eye-opening and that it may strengthen our resolve to continue fighting for our fundamental rights.
