350.org – Amazon was sold! Understand the full story

Deforestation and other threats faced by indigenous peoples in the Amazon region have increased dramatically in recent years. In all likelihood, those will increase even further due to the lack of regulation and the licensing of land for oil extraction and mining in territories held to be sacred.

350.org has been working to defend Amazon since 2015. That same year, we won a ban on oil and shale gas extraction in the Juruá Valley. At that point, Petrobrás could not carry out any activity related to the extraction, including flyovers or research.

And yet, the fight must go on!

What is the Amazon we want?

In Peru, there were about 500 oil spills between 2000 and 2019. In the Ecuadorian Amazon, there were more than 900 spills between 2005 and 2015.

In December 2020, Brazil had an auction, and Amazon lands were sold to the fossil fuel industry. 350 were there protesting in front of the event with Cacique Ninawa Huni Kui, spiritual leader and chief of the Huni Kuin people in Pan Amazonia, and Alexandre Anderson, National leader of the artisanal fishermen community in Brazil, who also has been affected by the industry.

Eneva, a Brazillian company that has 23% of its business controlled by an investment bank called BTG Pactual, bid for the drilling blocks in the Amazon.

BTG Pactual has a strong appeal for ESG investments (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance), but being part of Eneva, they are actually involved in many fossil fuel projects including ones in Pantanal and now Amazon – important biomes in Latin America.

We must stop them!

The dismantling of environmental policies means grave consequences for the whole world. Deforestation and the granting of land for oil extraction and mining, in addition to harming thousands of local families, contribute significantly to global warming and climate change.
