Pacific Greetings,

We are the Council of Elders, the steering committee of the youth-led network of climate campaigners spread across the Pacific and the world, known as the Pacific Climate Warriors.

As young pacific people living on the climate crisis’s frontlines, we know the realities of this changing environment; we live through those disasters and are in a perpetual state of recovery.

While we speak many languages across the Blue Pacific, our shared language is one of respect, and in that spirit, we are reaching out to you today to humbly put forward the voices of the young people we serve and the islands we love.

We call on your company to rule out any insurance services for all aspects of the Carmichael coal mine and rail project in Queensland, Australia, proposed by the Adani Group of companies. We exclude the Adani group as a whole until the Carmichael project is cancelled.

If Apollo was to insure any aspect of Adani’s coal projects, it will:

  • Destroy the ancestral lands, waters, and cultures of Indigenous people without their consent.
  • Allow 500 more coal ships to travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area every year for 60 years.
  • Get access to 270 billion litres of Queensland’s precious groundwater for 60 years, for free.
  • Risk damaging aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.
  • Add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution to our atmosphere.

Critically, if allowed to go ahead, Adani’s Carmichael coal mine will unlock the Galilee Basin – one of the world’s largest untouched coal reserves – paving the way for at least eight more coal mines to be built. All at a time when scientists are warning us, we can’t build any more fossil fuel infrastructure if we want to avoid catastrophic global heating.

No one should allow this mine to go ahead.

Now is the time to move away from destructive projects like the Adani mine.

We call on your company to rule out any insurance services for all aspects of the Carmichael coal mine and rail project in Queensland, Australia, proposed by the Adani Group of companies and exclude the Adani group as a whole until the Carmichael project is cancelled.

We look forward to your prompt reply to unequivocally rule out your company’s involvement in any part of the Adani Carmichael coal project.

Council of Elders,
Pacific Climate Warriors.
